Default Insuring Bikes & Valuables while travelling ?

    Hi there,

We are new to the site - a family of four about to emark on a big adventure around Australia early next year in our camper trailer.

We are looking at insuring our gear, particularly mountain bikes, while we travel but can't find anyone who will insure past 3 months travel (we will be away 12 months plus).

Can anyone offer any advice or suggest an insurer who may be helpful to us?

    Kind regards,
    Happy Campers

Hey Happy Camper welcome aboard the site. Sounds like a great trip. What sort of camper are you using. I would have thought that it didnt matter how long you were away from home base for. Have you tried RACV.

    Hi Ken

Thanks for your welcome! Hope to get lots of helpful hints and tips before we embark on our adventure. We are towing a Jayco Swan Outback, picking it up next week.

I have checked with RACV, but at the time didn't know about any time limits and they weren't overly forthcoming with extra details. Have since checked three other insurers and they all have 90 day limits, so I need to double check with RACV but imagine they will have the same deal. Hopefully there is some cover out there for people like us.

    Cheers,
    Happy Campers

You will have to let us know how you go with the insurance mate. I would also be interested in seeing how the Jayco goes. The wife and I have just sold our camper and we are looking at buying a Jayco off road model. We are still deciding between the Swan and the Flamings as they both have certain things that we both like.

We've taken out valuables insurance (QBE) and the items are covered outside the home ie bikes, golf clubs etc. When you insure your van there is a certain amount of $$$ contents that is covered but you can up it if you need to. We have a Jayco Swan offroad and absolutely love it! We can all sleep in the van (6 of us) which is why we bought it. Very impressed with the room in it. Had lots of use already and hope to drive to Tassie end of year.

Hello welcome to the community..Accidents happens in a very unexpected time and places and we have to be ready all the time. Have you tried asking your bank, because some offer comprehensive travel insurance and this would cover your immediate family and the people travelling with you. I'm not an insurance broker myself so I can't give you a detailed note regarding this one bit I know that this could help. But I know that it would cover whether you travel by land, by sea or by air.
